Overview

The Royal Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park, is a mesmerizing destination situated 162 km south of Kathmandu in the lowlands of the inner Terai. Encompassing an expansive area of 937 sq. km, the park showcases a diverse range of ecosystems. The hilly areas are adorned with deciduous Sal forests, while the floodplains of the Narayani, Rapti, and Reu rivers boast dense elephant grass interspersed with riverine forests of silk cotton, acacia, and sisam trees.

This ecologically rich haven is home to a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. It provides a sanctuary for endangered species such as the Asian One-horned Rhino, elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, and graceful leopard. Additionally, the park shelters various deer species, sloth bears, Rhesus and Langur monkeys, wild boars, jackals, civets, mongooses, cats, and snakes like the cobra, viper, and crait.

The rivers and lakes within the park teem with life, including crocodiles such as the Marsh Mugger and the extraordinary Gangetic dolphins, which add to the awe-inspiring biodiversity. Bird enthusiasts will find delight in Chitwan, as it hosts over four hundred species of both migratory and local birds. Cormorants, herons, egrets, storks, cranes, ducks, woodpeckers, hawks, ospreys, falcons, kestrels, parakeets, ibis, kites, cuckoos, kingfishers, swallows, orioles, drongos, babblers, and countless others grace the park with their presence.
